A stunning marsh scene by very well-known New Orleans artist James Lamantia. He was an icon here in New Orleans, having won many international honors and gained quite a bit of stature, and teaching for years at Tulane's art school while painting. My price asked is within the AUCTION (wholesale) estimates for this painting! It measures 17" x 28" framed, 16" x 27" without frame. The label on the back shows that this painting was purchased by the Arts Council of New Orleans. Here's some bio information from AskArt: "James Rogers Lamantia was born in 1923. Lamantia graduated from the School of Architecture at Tulane University and Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. He received the Prix de Rome in 1948 and a Fulbright Fellow to Italy in 1949. For many years he taught art and architecture at Tulane where he was appointed a full professor in 1974." Interestingly enough, I am reading a great book about the politics at the Met in New York that mentions him by name - he was the only outside exhibition designer allowed to fly to New York to help with the author's first blockbuster show under the author's directorship of the Met. He died in New Orleans, LA on February 19, 2011.
