Louis Carrier-Belleuse

Louis Carrier-Belleuse was a fine painter, and even better known as a sculptor. In fact I just saw a great bust of his while in Atlanta for vacation, at the High Museum. He worked in France in the latter half of the 19th century, concentrating mostly on genre scenes. Here, however, is a seascape, depicting a refined and well-dressed mother and daughter gazing out at the ocean over sand dunes, on the porch of what is probably a beach resort. The statue of a saint or scholar faces the sea behind them. A romantic and inspiring painting! 26”h x 35”w (20”h x 28”w unframed)
