An arresting portrait of a strong character in Elizabethan clothing, a very old painting on a wood panel. I am not enough of an expert on very old paintings to know the date, or even the century, to be honest, when the support is a wood panel (I can tell some things from canvas, stretchers and nails). (I put 18th-century only because date is a requirement in these descriptions.) At any rate - here's one to put above your fireplace and tell visitors it's your ancestor the Duke of ______ . In decent shape for a painting of this age - traces of inpainting mostly along one edge next to the frame but nothing that detracts much, to my eye. In an ornate gilt wooden frame.
