Felix Joseph Barrias (1822 – 1907) Study for Argentine Commander Pencil and Watercolor Gouache on Paper 17″ x 21″ $495 Barrias had Edgar Degas, Gustave Guillaumet and other notables as students! This is pencil-annotated as being a study for Barrias’ brother Louis-Ernest Barrias (1841 – 1905), a well-known sculptor of the time. From AskArt: An academic* painter of history and religious subjects, Felix Joseph Barrias is the son of a painter on porcelain and the brother of sculptor Louis-Ernest Barrias. Felix studied at the École des Beaux-Arts* in Paris and followed the teachings of Leo Cogniet. In 1844, he received significant recognition by winning the Grand Prix de Rome* for his painting, Cincinnatus, a scene of receiving ambassadors to the Roman Senate. In 1845, he won a 3rd class medal for his Paris Salon* painting entry, Sappho, and received a first-class medal in 1851 for his painting, Exile of Tiberius. Barrias earned a 2nd class medal for Jubilee of 1300 at the Exposition Universelle, Paris-1855, and received a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle, Paris-1889. He was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1897. Barrias had many students in his private studio, including Edgar Degas (1834-1917), Fernand Peel (1848-1913), Etienne Prosper Berne-Bellecour (1838-1910), Gustave Guillaumet (1840-1884), Jean- Georges Vibert (1840-1902), Henri Pille (1844-1897) and Jean-Jacques Scherrer (1855-1916).
