You can almost feel the feathers and hear the happy clucking as these chickens have at their pan of feed. Schouten specialized in animal scenes such as this, depicting them with uncanny accuracy, something very difficult to accomplish. Look at the superb foreshortening of the white chicken bent over the pan -- quite a feat (chicken feat?). Schouten was born in Indonesia in 1864 and died in Brussels in 1927. He studied at the Academy of Brussels, and was influenced by the painter Verwee (Arto). Framed and ready to hang. Dimensions are 23" x 31" in the frame, canvas is 17" x 23.5".
